Unit 1 - 4

Unit 1
In this unit,  I will be studying is Greek theatre and they play that we are studying is Antigone. At first i haven't heard of Antigone so I had to do my research. At first I watched the film of Antigone.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0T7oRQqnFzA&list=PLjAYlUiAhOZ5xJhxtxojqCKFnZs5-lzCh&index=2

Whiles i was watching Antigone i learned about Antigone and her sister have a strong relationship. At the start of the play Antigone and her sister are talking about Creon and is his leadership which is the king of Thebes. Antigone is trying to persuade her sister to bury her brother. However her sister disagree with as she wants her sister to be safe and want.

I don't like this play because it's not very interesting and fun i felt that they could of been m;ore action. I just felt that it could been a lot of action. On the other hand i like the fact the play brought on a lot of issue and problem during that time.

Rehearsals
Also we discussed what an actor need to perform.
Few things that  an actor should have when they performing
  • Projection - We need projection because when it comes to performing the audience need to hear us.
  • Tone -  We needed tone to show the audience we are feeling by our voices.
  • Clear voice - We needed a clear voice so that audience could understand us.
  • Eye contact -  We would need eye contact to audience and the characters that we are communicating to.
  • Communication - we needed communication as it the most important aspect of drama when it comes to performing and giving feedback and coming up with ideas for creating  piece or doing a piece.
  • Improv
  • Body language - we would need body language to make the audience understand how we are feeling.
  • team work- being able to work as a team because some scenes that you do is usually with other actor so you have to able to work with a team.
  • humble/ patience  - not brings issues  from outside and just being able to do the work by bieng calm an patience with others and also listening to people ideas or feedback without disrupting them
  • time management - Always being on time to rehearsals because if your l]ate your effect you and everyone else that is working with you.
  • evaluation/ thick skinned  - Always listening to people feedback even if it's positive or negative taken it and working on it in rehearsals
  •  acceptance to others / respect  - Showing respect to the other actors in the class
  • awareness
  • creativity - being creative when doing scene, giving ideas to your group about things that you can do during a performances
  • risk taking- being able to not hold back when rehearsals and just being open to doing anything.
  • having fun
  • confidence
  • take people ideas into consideration
  • humour
  • movement
  • physical theatre
  • cultural sponge
  • determination
  • listening
  • character

We came up with these ideas to help us improve and see what we need when it comes to performing. After we came up with these attributes, we had to come up with a performance, where we had shown all of these a characteristic. Later that week , We did a warm up. We had to walk around the class and give everyone eye contact because eye contact is key to performing.

During the first rehearsals i found out who i was working with and i' working with Diego. The scene  that we are doing is Creon and Haemon are talking about Antigone. Creon believes that she is a criminal because of what she did. However Hameon believes that she's innocent and that she doesn't deserved what they are doing to her. Me and Diego read the scene and i thought that my character is an evil character and that he doesn't care about people but himself. I felt sorry for the son because he's the type of character that wants to be freedom. In the scene i felt that Haemon has a lot of angry towards his father. Also Hameon cares about Antigone that why he disagree with his father.

We got up on our feet and did the scene with reading the script. At first i was rushing the lines but Diego told me to take my time with it.

During rehearsals me and Diego had an idea to switch character to see how other would see the character. When I was listening to Diego saying his lines. i could see  my character being a fool because the things that he says are just so rude and evil . The way he would talk and treat women were harsh. At that the time women and men would not be treated equally. After that we performed it to the whole class and the feedback that i received was that I need to remember my lines because it look like i was reading from the script instead of acting.

During rehearsal would did a couple of vocal exercises. This is good because we warm up of vocals because vocal are key thing  in acting. One the vocal warm ups we did is tongue twisters. An example of a tongue twister is  Remove the Romans after approximately 400 years, add lots of Normans French to some angles, Saxons,Jutes and Vikings, then stir vigorously. Tongue Twister are very hard for me because  i'm not good with articulated words when 'm performing. However if i keep practising them it would help with articulated my words with performing. Another vocal exercise that we did is imagine you was eating a sugar donuts and the their sugar around your lips. lick the sugar around your lips. This exercise help us with our tongue using our tongue to speak. Another one is push your tongue to the back of your teeth and push your tongue out and in ( it's like press up for your tongue). At first doing these exercise felt a bit weird because i'm around people that i only meet in week. However I had to let myself go and do the task because these vocal exercise would benefit me when i'm performing. It would help with pronouncing words.

Later that day, I watched some vocal warm ups to help me with performances .  I watched the national theatre. I learnt that you have  began your vocal warm with some breathing exercising and then it's working on your resonance and by doing that is humming so that it feel that when actor are performing it coming from their whole body. After that it's  opening your voices and then it articulation. This has help me a lot with rehearsals and performing

Here the link
1.Breathing exercising
2.Resonance
3.Opening your voice
4.Vocal Techniques

During rehearsals Me and Diego thought of doing the first page because we have two pages. I felt that if we try to remember the first page and then move on to to do the second page. We thought about where we are going to move and what action we we should do. However I found that very hard because at some parts of the texts i had to get angry and i'm not an angry person. So i just thought of the time whereby i was really angry and upset. When we were showing our performance the feedback we got was the same as last week and also it felt that we were not listening to each other.

So after that rehearsals Me and Diego took all the feedback that we revived and worked on it. I was trying to remember lines and write note on my character during the scene. I wrote down that I should not move a lot because i'm the king. the king is high up and he gets things given to him. Also I wrote down my relationship between me and Diego. Me and Diego relationship during this scene is a father and sons relationship. However Diego character is a quite character he's seen as the son to the king nothing else but he want to prove to his father and other people that he not just that. Everything that his father says to him not true.

I watched Tia,Sebastian, Kaddie  performance and i really enjoy their performance. When the were performing the had very good pitch. everyone could hear them clearly. They need to take they are time with the scene. They posture was very good you could tell that Sebstain character  was high status than Kaddie and Tia character.

After we performed it to the rest of the class. At first i was nervous because i didn't know my lines as much. i only knew the first page of it. However whiles we were performing our piece, it went well. The feedback that we received was that we should bring the performance more closer the audiences. Also taking my time with the performances. At the beginning it wasn't rushed after that it that felt that the lines were rushed.

Antigone background
In Antigone they show loving someone in different types of ways For example the love that Antigone has for her family especially for her brothers. She didn't want them to fight. When she found they were both dead she was horrified  and then to find out that one of the brother couldn't be buried because he's seen by traitor. Also her relationship with her sister is very close. They both care about each other. When Antigone was caught for trying to bury her brother,  Antigone sister tries to defend her sister.

Also the shows determination, whereby Antigone is breaking the law to do what is right and she doesn't care about the consequences that would happen to her. This play shows how society was back then which is SEXISM !. Women and men are not treated equally. Whiles watching the play all the lords were men. When they find out that Antigone does what she does, they are surprise they thought it would be a man.

Antigone compares two types of law, one is religion being free to be whatever religion you want to be and secondly is the justice for her brother and everyone who has been effected my the lords and government. However the men are high up they believe in their law and law from the Gods.

Background of Religion
People at that time believed that they were many different God's and Goddesses. They believed that they would help them through life and death. To show how important they were they built temples where their are statues of  the God's and Goddesses. They temples in every city for each God or Goddesses.  The  priest were important and respect in the community because they believed that he had the power to communicate with God.

The theatre in Epidauros

Technical  Rehearsal
At the start of the lesson, we had a talk with the production team of what happening today and anything that we needed in the performance. Me and Diego were on the stage we had to sit down and wait for our performance so that we can stand up do our scene. Technical   rehearsals are really good for actor and the production team. This give a chance for the actors and the production team to work together for example putting the lights, sound, background, putting props around the stage. So that the show could be amazing  show.

Evaluation
I didn't enjoy my performance as i felt that I could of done a lot better. On the other hand I was  that I was confident, my projection was loud, the audiences could hear from the back. Also didn't move around while i was talking, I stood said my lines.Another thing that I felt that me and Diego did well was our listening. It felt that we was having a conversation.

On other hand, I could of took my time, Whiles watching my performance it felt that i said my line. I need play with the words. Another thing that i could work on is that at part of the scene whereby i messed up my lines. I Could of improvise and made it look like i didn't mess up. Also whiles i was performing I need to work on my articulation with some of the sentence for example the line "

The Seagull plot
At the start of the play Sorin invites his family over as Treprev wants to show his family his show. Act 1 takes place in country side. When Treprev tries to put his show on. The show runs unsuccessfully. Treplev wanted to impress his mother and his family. Treplev is a famous actress However Treprev wants to break out of his mother's  shadow. However in the first act everyone including his mother mocks him and he run off. In Act 2 so much arguments happen throughout. Treplev shoots a Seagull for Nina However Nina is disgusted which give Trigion idea when he see the dead seagull. Nina is Treplev girlfriend  at the start. Trigion is a famous writer and he married to Treplev mother (Arkadina). Trigion idea is about a girl who is happy live on the lake like seagull and then a man comes into a her lie and ruin it because he's bored. Trigion and Arkandina have to leave whiles Treplev tires to commit suicide however it only gazed his skull. Throughout the act he's injury. Whilst Trigion is about to leave he has breakfast, Nina catches him and begs him to stay. In act 3 Trigion and Treplev have a big argument. After the argument Trigion wants to leave however Arkandina begs him stay in Moscow. Trigion agree to stay. On the other hand Sorin fates. Nina tells Trigion that she is going to runaways so that she could be a famous actress what she want him to come with him . Nina and Trigion kiss and makes plans to meet. Act 4 is 2 years after, Nina is failed actress, Nina has a baby with Trigion however the baby dies which makes Trigion leave Nina by herself. He runs back to Arkandina. Unfortunate Sorin passes  away. Masha accepts Medvencko marriage and two of them have a baby however she still in love Treplev and she looks after him as he injuried. Everyone is at the dinning table playing bingo however Treplev is not playing. Everyone leaves him however Nina comes back to him. Treplev is angry but excited because the love of his life has just returned. Nina comes to apologise to Treplev. Also tell him that she has to Yelets. Treplev tries to win Nina back however Nina doesn't want him back which leads to him killing himself. All everyone could hear is a gun shot.

The character that I play is Treprelv. He's the son of Arkandina who is an famous actress in Russia. She is married to Trigon who is a famous writer. Treprelv doesn't have good relationship with his step father because Trigon stole the love of his life who is Nina. At the start of the play hes in love with Nina however she is not just there because she's an actress and want that fame. However later throughout the play she moves on Trigon and fall in love with him. Whiles reading the play I Started to dislike Nina character because she was using Treplev character to be famous actress.

At the start of the play my character is having  identity crisis because he's in his mum shadow. He wants to people to see that he's famous writer. Trigion has a weird relationship with his mother because of the generation gap. He's mother believes in that life is this way that why she's is tough with her son. However he wants to be loved and cared for however Arkandina shows it in different way.

Rehearsals
I was working with Tegan on the play. The scene that we are doing is when Nina return as she find out that she has to move to Yelets because Trigion had left  her to back with his EX's. which is Treplev mother. She returns to Treplev to apologise to him and tell him that she is moving to Yelets. Whiles we were  reading the scene we made some note about our character. I said that my character seem to depressed and sad because of the event that has happen during the horrible events for example his girlfriend leaving him for his Step father.  When Nina returns you can tell that  Treplev has mixed emotions. He's happy that she has return back. He feels that Nina would return to him however when he finds out that Nina doesn't want him back.

Later on Rehearsals

we wrote down themes and thoughts of the play.
We sat down as group discussed about the themes and thoughts about the play. Also what we could remember about the play. My thoughts about the play is that I find the play Entertaining whilst reading the is love triangle and also it a play with in a play.

Later on we discussed about the themes in the play. The themes in the play are Love, it comes up every time. There is a love triangle in the play between every character. Also there is Art and Culture, art is the second that is brought up a lot. Half of the cast work in the entertainment industry. Jealously is shown in the play. Treplev and Trigon are jealously of each other because they want what the have. Treplev wants to be a accomplished writer however Trigon want to live his youth girl after he meet Nina. Another theme that is shown is dissatisfaction, each character is unhappy or unsuccessful and when something great happen in there lives bad thing comes their way.

Later on rehearsals, Me and Teagan developed our character by taking the feedback from our peers and using it to work on it on our rehearsals. The feedback that we received is that we need to bring the performance more downstage because it was upstage it didn't feel that we are connecting with the audiences. However the scene felt natural which i got that from the Stanislavsky technique and his steps which has helped me with the process of developing my character.

Me watching Elena and Ankaian performance, they're both doing the same scene as us. This is good for me because it make me see how someone else portray Treplev. The performance was really good however I felt that Ankaian energy was bit low and at some part he was bit quite so I told him to be louder so that the back row could hear him. Elena I felt that she could be more caring towards Treplev because Nina does care for Treplev.

Konstantin Stanislavski
Stanislavski was born in Russia in 1863. Stanislavsky was born into a wealthy family whereby they would go the theatre and Stanislavski would learn and enjoy theatre. Later on he wanted to not use his family name which was Konstantin Sergeyevich because he wanted to go out of his family name and change it Stanislavski. In 1898 Stanislavski and Vladimir nemorouch Danchenko found the Moscow whereby the would performed the seagull and Hamlet. In 1917 the Russia Revaluation happened and the Russia economic was effect bad so Stanislavski had to use his family inheritance so that the theatre could be open.

Image result for konstantin stanislavski

When Stanislavski was a young boy who his family owned two theatre whereby he would go and watch and later on perform.Whiles he was performing he would evaluate himself which is now known as the Stanislavski method.   HE believed that acting comes from being natural on the stage. BEING THE CHARACTER!!!!. Stanislavski had 7 steps. Who am I? Where am I ? When is it? What do I want ? Why do i want it ? How will I get it ? What do I need to overcome?. Also he believed that the actor should  reading the script so that the know their lines. Also the 4th wall and What if ?. Also Stanislavsky believed in objective which what do you want to achieve. Also what do want to gain from the scene. My Objective in this scene is to win Nina back because she's the love of life and i'm going to do this by holding her hand. Looking into her eyes. My Tone of voice would be  lower and calm when i'm telling her that I love her.

Rehearsals
During rehearsals Me and Teagan took the Stanislavski techniques and used it to help us know our character.  I Answered the seven steps

Who am I?
I'm playing Treplev , a writer from Russia trying to make it big. He's about early 20's and he's an only child to a famous actress.
Where am i ?
In the scene me and Teagan are at the ballroom in sorin house in Russia.
When is it?
It's in 1895 and the scene is at the night time.
What do I want ?
I want to Nina to love me again and he wants answers because Nina left him with someone else and she didn't tell him.
How will I get it ?
I will hold her hand and look into her eyes and talk to her to show that I care about her and I need her.

Unit 2

Whiles performing I need to know who am performing to. I'm going to do this by finding out the audience members  age, gender, culture and group members because when your performing you want to relate to the audience. Also you want audience members to understand the piece. I wanted to modernising  the text so that the younger audience could understand what's is going on. However I don't think the younger audience would come and watch both of the performance as they wouldn't understand what's going on. If the audience members don't understand the performance it would make them either talk or fall asleep during the performances which is not really good for the actors. To make that not happen I need to make the show live, fun and entertaining. By making working with the production team on lights and sound and costumes. Also finding ways what people like, I know that my generation love Hip Hop and Rap so during one of the scene or in my scene I could do a Rap. This would surprise the audience member because it would  entertain the audiences. Also I could break the 4th wall whereby I'm interacting with the audiences.

Anyone could watch Antigone and The seagull because it show a lot themes that could relate to the audience members. However In Antigone the language is Ancient Greek so some of the words audience member would not understand so i want to modernise some the language so that the audience members could understand the text. If they understand the text they would understand they piece which would be goo for the actors.

Unit 3

Health and Safety Rules
  1. No chewing gum
  2. Showing respect to other in the class or anyone
  3. No messing around lesson
  4. Don't be late to lesson
  5. Actor are advise to not smoke.
  6. Have fun !!!!!
  7. No eating and drinking fizzy drink in class
These are very important for actors because it helps you to not be in harm. Everyone should follow the rules because if you don't it would effected you.

One rehearsals I lead a vocal warm up for the class. I used some of the National vocal warm up to help lead this warm up. I want to do Vocal warm ups first and then run around and then play a game because if you run around you start to get energy and your warmed up.After if you play drama game everyone having fun so after the fun they would feel happy so that they could rehearsals. After that I wanted to some stretches so that everyone could relax from the hyper active  warm up

How would we make the theatre accessible to the audiences ?
In the theatre, having a disable accesses in the theatre would be excellent because it anyone would be allowed to see the show. You need promote your show.So that people could find about it on magazine, newspaper, billboard, social media,T.V, internet and go and watch the show. You need have a website which has a good and accessible booking system so that people could buy their tickets.

Evaluation
During this process, it was hard because i had to show love but i never been in a relationship before however i thought of over people that i loved in  my life and used that in my scene. Everyone rehearsal  i felt that i was get into my character because i would perform it by using naturalism which is one Stanislavsky techniques. Also I felt that Me and Teagan working well together, we got on with the work and we felt comfortable with each other which made out scene look real.

During the performance, I was confident and loud which is good because the audience member could understand me and the performance. When me and Teagan performed the scene  it felt very natural. Audience members said that scene felt real and they could see the love between us. Another thing that went well is that our eye contact was good, when i had to speak to her about taking me back, I looked at her straight in her eyes which was really excellent.

However I need to work on movement it felt that i need to work on body language because In the scene i'm different time period. My posture could have been more down and look negative. When i went to check on who at the door I need to be more angry and terrifying because the scene is at night time and someone random person. Also When i asking Nina to take me back i need to change my tone of voice down and negative because my character going through a lot.

Unit 9
